Passionate fans and a love for basketball come as no surprise to Rattlers' management
There’s a new hot topic of sports discussion drifting across the golden plains of Saskatchewan. Whether at a local bar or restaurant, or at a family dinner table, people are asking about the Saskatchewan Rattlers and the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL).
On a daily basis, the Rattlers’ social media feeds are dominated by questions about where and when merchandise can be purchased, how fans can get involved and much more. Some fans have even taken to submitting court mock-ups for what the Rattlers’ home court should look like.
Local coaches and athletes from the professional football world have also taken to voicing their support for the team. Charleston Hughes and Nik Lewis of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, as well as local Saskatoon native and current Los Angeles Charger, Brett Boyko, have taken to Twitter to voice their excitement for the team.
“Can’t wait for the @SASK_Rattlers season to start!! Heard tickets are going fast so I need to get on that!” tweeted Boyko.
“Basketball is my favorite sport, so I’m pumped to be attending some Rattlers games,” added Lewis, a two-time Grey Cup champion with the Calgary Stampeders and a current coach for the Roughriders.
As fanfare for the team continues to grow, Brad Kraft, the Rattlers’ recently announced director of business operations, said he’s not surprised by the passion shown by Rattlers fans.
“There’s always been an appetite for basketball here in Saskatoon and across Saskatchewan. People here love to rally behind their local teams and it’s been no different with the Rattlers. Each day people are stopping me on the street to ask how they get involved,” Kraft said.
In between answering inquiries from intrigued fans and golfers in attendance at Premier Scott Moe’s Saskatoon Sask Party Golf Tournament at The Willows Golf & Country Club, Kraft spoke about the special brand of sports fans that live in Saskatchewan.
As a former employee of the Saskatchewan Rush, Kraft plans to take lessons learned from the Rush and bring them to new heights with the Rattlers. Entertainment elements such as pre and post-game festivities involving live bands, DJs and interactive activities for fans are just a taste of what audiences can expect when they attend a Rattlers game.
“What excites me about the Rattlers is how Canada and the basketball community at large are going to learn more about what makes Saskatchewan fans truly unique. We’re passionate, hungry and eager to support our players in whatever way we can,” Kraft said.
Lee Genier, president and chief operating officer of CEBL western operations, echoed Kraft’s sentiments. Genier helped spearhead the Stampeders and Rush to multiple championships, respectively, and believes that the Rattlers are off to a promising start.
“People are seeing what I’ve done with previous sports experiences and they’re looking forward to having a similar or better time at Rattlers games. There’s a level of excitement there that comes with familiarity,” Genier said.
“This is a new entertainment option in town and people are excited about basketball, which speaks volumes to the growth of the sport in North America.”
